Carbon Farming in practice in the Netherlands

To achieve the set climate goals in The Netherlands, agriculture as a sector will also have to play its part; the agricultural sector has committed to this. On the one hand this can be achieved by limiting emissions, and on the other hand by sequestering more carbon dioxide (CO2) in plants and trees and in the soil.

What is Carbon Farming?

The Dutch government wants to encourage farmers to sequester extra carbon in the soil by applying specific management practices on the farm. Both the EU and the Netherlands mention a Carbon Farming system to encourage and pay farmers to apply these practices.
The public-private partnership (PPP) Carbon Farming project will develop and test a methodology for Carbon Farming in the Netherlands. This project explicitly discusses what is needed to sequester CO2 and that farmers are paid for this practice.
