In PPS Carbon Farming project, a methodology is being developed that will be handed over to the ministry of Agriculture to be used by farmers. This methodology aims to stimulate the farmers to apply practices on their farms to sequester carbon in the soil whilst being paid for these practices either by public or private funding. The methodology is supported by a protocol for a standardised, widely supported and potentially internationally recognised, robust methodology for carbon sequestration as part of carbon farming.
The two main criteria for this methodology are:
- providing rules for the valorisation of carbon sequestration on farms at farm level, at company level or at regional level. These rules follow the QU.A.L.ITY criteria set by the EU.
- ensuring coordination between farmer and funding.
The development of the PPS Carbon Farming methodology is work in progress. When new insights occur, through field testing and application in pilots, it can be adjusted according to its applicability in the Netherlands.
